Narrative

Patrolman Cannon was shot and killed instantly in front of the grocery store of J.B. Starks, Jr., at the northwest corner of Jackson and Roselane Streets at about 6:35 pm. It is believed that Patrolman Cannon who had just started his shift at 6pm was on his way from the police station to Engine House #9 near the corner of Jackson and Roselane Streets when he was fatally shot.

He was investigating a suspicious person in the area. He was shot and killed as he approached the suspect. The suspect surrendered to the Louisville Division of Police two (2) years later. He was tried for murder and acquitted.

This is near the same spot where Patrolman Edward Byrnes of the Louisville Division of Police was murdered in 1895.
